What Is Talalay Latex

The Talalay manufacturing process utilises a natural ingredient, latex foam rubber, and pouring it into molds to create pieces of molded foam that can be used in a variety of manufacturing designs and products. The natural latex rubber, in liquid form is poured into the closed mold, which has had all the air evacuated from it, leaving a vacuum. Once full of latex, the mold is then frozen. This freezing process helps to stabilize the structure of the latex cells.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is then introduced into the cell structure and the curing process is then completed by heating the mold. What is produced, be it a latex mattress or pillow, is considered to be a far healthier and more natural product than many other foam products which use petroleum based materials in the manufacturing process. Whether these products are as organic as they claim is up for debate, as the Talalay latex foam curing process uses a number of unspecified agents as part of the curing process, and ammonia is used to stabilize the liquid rubber.

The process was developed by Ansil, Joseph, and Leon Talalay, and a number of large manufacturers started using this process commercially in the 1940's and early 1950's. The very first production plants for the Talalay Latex foam process were in England, the USA, and Canada.
